Overview of the Theory Test for Cars
Before obtaining your full car driving licence in the UK, you need to pass the theory test, consisting of two main parts: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception.
Eligibility and Booking
Requirement for a Provisional Licence
- You must hold a provisional driving licence to book the theory test.
- Enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) holders can take the test from age 16.
Exemptions
- Automatic licence holders upgrading to manual.
- Holders of a category B1 licence issued before February 2001.
Test Structure
Multiple-Choice Questions
- Based on three essential books: The Highway Code, Know Your Traffic Signs, and Driving – The Essential Skills.
- 50 questions in total, with 57 minutes to complete.
- Includes three questions based on a silent video clip of driving scenarios.
Hazard Perception
- After a short break, you proceed to the hazard perception test.
- Watch 14 video clips showing everyday driving scenes.
- Identify developing hazards and click as they begin to develop.
- Scoring up to 5 points per hazard by responding promptly.
Passing and Results
Pass Marks
- Multiple-Choice: 43 out of 50 questions.
- Hazard Perception: 44 out of 75 points.
Outcome
- Receive results at the test centre immediately after completion.
- Must pass both parts to pass the entire theory test.
- A pass certificate number is issued, valid for two years for booking the practical driving test.
After the Test
Passing the Test
- Receive a pass certificate number required for booking the driving test.
- Must take the driving test within two years of passing the theory test.
Failing the Test
- Receive feedback on areas where points were insufficient.
- Required to retake both parts of the theory test after a three-working-day waiting period.

- Request accommodations such as headphone use or additional time during booking.
